Brown rice (uncooked)
Brown rice is whole grain rice with only the outer husk removed, leaving the bran and germ intact, giving it a chewy texture and nutty flavour. It takes longer to cook than white rice due to the intact bran layer and is used in the same range of dishes, from side dishes to grain bowls. Its bran layer also gives it a shorter shelf life than white rice due to the oils it contains.
Measured before cooking, while the ingredient hasn't yet absorbed water or changed texture.
