Licorice root (ground)
Liquorice root is the dried root of the liquorice plant, with a distinctly sweet, anise-like flavour used in confectionery, teas, and some traditional medicine. It is the source flavour behind liquorice candy, and is used in cooking mostly in small amounts due to its intense, lingering sweetness. Its flavour compound is many times sweeter than sugar by weight.
Grinding reduces an ingredient to a fine, even texture that generally packs more densely than a whole or crushed form.
