Popcorn (popped, loosely packed)
Popcorn is a variety of corn kernel that, when heated, bursts open into a light, airy puff due to the moisture and starch trapped inside. It is popped in oil, air-popped, or made in a microwave, and eaten as a snack, plain or seasoned with butter, salt, or other flavourings. The unpopped kernel is the same product as popping corn, before being heated.
Popping dramatically increases volume while barely changing weight, so popped measurements are much lighter per cup than the unpopped kernels.
