Popping corn (unpopped)
Popping corn refers to the dried, unpopped kernels of a specific corn variety bred to burst open into light, airy popcorn when heated. It is heated in oil, air-popped, or microwaved, expanding significantly in volume once popped compared to its dense, unpopped state. Its ability to pop depends on retaining a small amount of moisture within each kernel's hard hull.
In their unpopped, dense kernel form, these weigh considerably more per cup than after popping.
