Star anise (ground)
Star anise is a star-shaped dried spice pod with a strong, sweet, liquorice-like flavour, used whole or ground in both sweet and savoury cooking, particularly in Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. It is a key component of Chinese five spice and is often simmered whole in broths, braises, and mulled drinks, then removed before serving. Its flavour is more potent than that of common anise seed.
Grinding reduces an ingredient to a fine, even texture that generally packs more densely than a whole or crushed form.
