Turmeric (ground)

Turmeric is a bright yellow-orange spice made from the ground root of a plant in the ginger family, with a warm, earthy, slightly bitter flavour. It is widely used in South Asian and Southeast Asian cooking, giving curries and rice dishes their characteristic golden colour, and is a component of most curry powders. Its pigment stains readily, so care is often taken when handling it fresh or in powder form.

Grinding reduces an ingredient to a fine, even texture that generally packs more densely than a whole or crushed form.
