Walnuts (halves)
Walnuts are wrinkled, brain-shaped nuts with a rich, slightly bitter, earthy flavour, encased in a hard shell that splits into two halves. They are eaten raw or toasted as a snack, or used in baking, salads, and savoury dishes, particularly paired with blue cheese or in banana bread. Their high fat content means they can turn rancid more quickly than drier nuts if not stored properly.
Left in halves, these pieces trap more air in a cup than a chopped or crushed form of the same ingredient.
